Treknow (pronounced “Tree’~no” ) is a small settlement that nestles halfway up the valley at Trebarwith. Treknow is a settlement that was established in the early part of the 16th century to house the quarry workers who's endeavours have left there mark on the coastline between Trebarwith and Tintagel. Hole beach at the north end of Trebarwith strand is a good place to view major workings that have left a eerily beautiful landscape of towering slate columns and shingle slides. These quarries are long since closed but the huge chasms hewn into the cliff face are an astounding feat and easily conjure images of the hard realities of slate mining in 15th and 16th century Cornwall. Penhallic Point provided a natural quayside for loading the cargo Slate was also loaded on to sea going vessels from the natural harbour at Castle Cove between Tintagel Head and Barras Nose.
